Shining in our August Volunteer Spotlight: Mike and Bea Sherrill

Decades of service. A lifetime of giving.

Mike and Bea Sherrill have a long and meaningful history with Ashure Ministry. Both have been faithful members of Beth Eden Lutheran Church, one of our founding 15 churches, and both have supported Ashure in countless ways throughout the years.

Mike served as the accountant for Ashure Ministry for many years, beginning while Doris Fish was still our Executive Director. Later, Bea served on our board of directors. Now retired, they both continue to give their time and talents as volunteers.

Bea volunteers in the Ashure Ministry Thrift Store on Monday and Thursday afternoons where she usually works the cash register. She enjoys interacting with customers, hearing their stories, and spending time with the friends she has made through volunteering.

She especially enjoys working alongside Collin Yount at the register and her buddy, Felicia Harkey. Of course, Bea and Felicia have plenty of fun joking with each other about the State-Carolina rivalry!

Mike volunteers Thursday mornings as one of our grocery drivers, partnering with his longtime friend, Steve Cloninger. The two have been friends since high school, when they played together in the Newton-Conover band. (Out of respect, we won't say exactly how long ago that was!)

Mike enjoys the grocery runs because they bring back memories of his younger years. His first job was at Harris Teeter, so he has plenty of experience working with grocery stores—and he still looks back fondly on those days. He and Steve also enjoy giving each other a hard time over the State-Carolina rivalry. At this point, it's practically a family tradition!

Service to others has always been important to Mike and Bea. Whether they're at Beth Eden, volunteering at Ashure Ministry, or simply out and about in downtown Newton, they are always looking for ways to help others. Even during the hustle and bustle of Old Soldiers' Reunion Week, Mike is always willing to stop and lend a hand to someone around the square.

Their dedication to serving others has even influenced the next generation. That commitment helped inspire their son to follow a similar path, and today, he serves Ashure Ministry as our Volunteer Engagement Director.

Mike and Bea, thank you for the countless ways you have served Ashure Ministry and our community over the years. Your faithfulness, humor, friendship, and willingness to serve are deeply appreciated. We are grateful to have both of you as part of the Ashure volunteer family and hope we'll have the privilege of serving alongside you for many years to come!
