Devastating Setback

Jack is a hardworking man who prides himself on his independence and never asking anyone for help. He walked into our office with a tired, heavy expression—one that spoke long before he ever said a word.

In the days leading up to his visit, Jack had been hit by a setback that left him devastated. His debit card had been used fraudulently, draining every dollar he had. When he contacted the bank, they assured him they were working to recover the funds, but the process would take time—time he didn’t have. Unfortunately, his lease included a clause stating that if his power were ever disconnected, it would be grounds for eviction.

He described himself to Donna, his case manager, as a proud man, and told her that simply walking through our doors felt like admitting defeat. With no access to his funds to pay his utility bill and no guarantee when the reimbursement would come through, Jack felt hopeless. He told Donna he spent the night before praying, pacing, and asking God for help.

Once Jack shared his situation, Donna immediately began exploring options that would get Jack the help he needed as quickly as possible. His need was urgent, and waiting for the bank wasn’t an option if he was going to stay in his home. Donna completed an application for utility assistance so that any risk of disconnection could be stopped. Throughout the process, Jack sat quietly—shoulders tense, eyes down, clearly unsure of what the outcome might be. Donna reassured him we would do everything we could.

The moment Jack realized that we could indeed help him is one Donna wouldn’t soon forget. Jack’s eyes immediately welled up with tears. Then, slowly, he confided,

"I asked God for help last night, and this news feels like an answer straight from God Himself!"

As he gathered his things to leave, he asked if he could give Donna a hug, smiling for the first time since he arrived. He walked out of the office standing taller, his voice steadier, and for the first time that day, he looked like a man who believed things were going to be okay again.
