Stronger Together
I’m sorry, but we can’t keep you on…” Those are words no one wants to hear. For Willis,* who was already struggling financially with rising medical costs, this news hit especially hard. As a veteran, Willis was always determined to keep pressing on. He wanted to find a new job, but beyond temporary work, nothing came through.
Realizing he could not do it alone, Willis turned to his church group for advice. His friends prayed for him and offered him meals, and his family suggested he reach out to Ashure Ministry. Willis gathered up the courage to ask or help. He met with Audrey, his case manager here at Ashure Ministry. Willis explained his situation and his willingness to find work but stated it had been difficult. He also shared that even though his VA benefits covered rent and power, he was struggling to pay for food, gas, clothes, and his wife’s medicine.
Audrey quickly reassured him there was nothing to be embarrassed about, and she swiftly processed his food assistance application. She informed Willis that his food card was ready for immediate use. Willis was shocked; he had been struggling to buy food for months and was truly overwhelmed by the love and care he had just received. "This is such a relief," Willis expressed, feeling the weight lift from his shoulders.
Audrey also encouraged Willis to attend our Crisis Assistance Coaching Program (CACP) with his wife, if possible, to help them further navigate this challenging time. They were able to do just that, and through this class they learned about programs to help them reduce their current expenses and even additional resources for Willis as a veteran. It truly was a turning point.
Willis and Fay* are now breathing easier, knowing they have help navigating these tough times. Willis recently found full-time work again, but they will never forget the dark days they had before they came to Ashure Ministry. They will also never forget that this help was made possible by a loving community living out the truth that we are stronger together. We cannot thank you enough for helping those like Willis and Fay move beyond their crisis.
