Timing is Everything
One morning, Anita, one of our food pantry volunteers, stepped outside to greet a family she remembered from their first visit to the food pantry. She recognized the cute little boy, 5-year-old Billy, who excitedly asked, “Hello! Do you have any chicken today?” Anita paused, knowing she hadn’t seen any chicken that morning, but smiled and replied, “I’m not sure, Billy, but I’ll see if I can find some for you.” His little face lit up with hope, and he joyfully exclaimed, “Thanks!”
As Anita began putting together the cart of groceries for the family, she checked the cooler for anything resembling chicken. There was nothing; but just at that moment, Dora, one of our volunteers, walked up with a bag of chicken that had just been donated from a local restaurant. Anita’s eyes lit up. “Oh boy! We have chicken!” she said with excitement. “Little Billy is going to be so happy!”
Anita pushed the cart out to the family’s car and held the bag of chicken high in front of Billy. “Look what I found for you!” she exclaimed. Billy’s face beamed with pure joy. He shouted, “YEEEEESSSS! I was hoping for some chicken! You’re the best!” His mother gave Anita a heartfelt hug and said, “Thank you so much! You’ve made Billy’s day.” Anita happily replied, “I’m just thankful I could find some chicken!”
It’s moments like this that remind us how something as simple as a bag of chicken can bring such joy and comfort. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. If this family had come just 5 minutes earlier or 15 minutes later, the chicken may not have been there.
