Shining in Our March Volunteer Spotlight: David and Mary Puett

David and Mary Puett have become incredible additions to the food pantry volunteer team, consistently stepping in wherever needed and bringing a steady, dependable presence to the ministry. Mary was first introduced to Ashure Ministry through United Way’s Day of Caring, and it didn’t take long for her to feel a strong connection. After just one visit, she knew this was where she wanted to serve. Within a month, David joined her after hearing how meaningful the experience had been. Now, about a year and a half later, they’ve become an essential part of the pantry, and we are grateful for the impact they make each day.

Their willingness to serve in a variety of roles has been a tremendous asset. Mary helps build carts, check eggs, work the pantry door, and with data entry—wherever there’s a need, she’s ready. David often starts his day stocking freezers and coolers before moving on to cardboard, cart building, or any other task that needs attention. Together, they embody the kind of teamwork that keeps everything running smoothly.

One of the things they appreciate most is the shared sense of purpose among volunteers. While many have regular roles, there is a natural rhythm of stepping in and helping without being asked. Everyone is attentive, quick to act, and committed to the same goal. It creates an environment that feels both efficient and deeply connected—like a well-coordinated effort where every part matters.

For the Puetts, the relationships they’ve built are just as meaningful as the work itself. They’ve formed strong connections with fellow volunteers and value the welcoming, lighthearted atmosphere. David especially enjoys the sense of humor that carries throughout the day. He recalls a moment when he jokingly labeled another volunteer the “Cardboard Manager”—a title that was proudly worn for the rest of the shift.

They also spoke with appreciation for the staff, noting how consistently volunteers are greeted with gratitude and encouragement. That culture of appreciation leaves a lasting impression.

Most meaningful of all is the opportunity to serve those who come through the pantry. Mary shared how impactful it is to see genuine gratitude from individuals receiving assistance. Even while she is serving, she often hears words of kindness and encouragement in return. She also values the faith-centered nature of Ashure Ministry, from opportunities to pray with those who ask, to the visible reminders of hope throughout the place.

David and Mary, your dedication, compassion, and servant-hearted spirit make a lasting difference. Thank you for all you do to support the mission of Ashure Ministry.
