Shining in our December Volunteer Spotlight... Denny Schell!
Denny initially saw an announcement about the ministry in his church bulletin at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Newton, and since then has been a very faithful volunteer. At the time, the ministry needed grocery drivers, and Denny decided he would see if he could help. We had some weekend spots available, and Denny took them. He has been doing these runs now for the last 10 years!
Denny does the grocery run for us on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. He also pitches in when there’s a fifth Saturday or when someone else has to miss their week. Denny usually brings someone from his church to help. He occasionally brings his wife, who not only helps with the pickups, but also is usually one of our strongest competitors at the annual Ashure Ministry Golf Tournament! Besides the grocery runs, Denny has also served on the Ashure Ministry Board of Directors.
Additionally, Denny will also come in during the week to serve in the pantry if we need him in a pinch. Denny always comes to volunteer with a smile on his face. He greets everyone he encounters and usually has something to joke with folks about. Denny is never afraid to throw out a “Dad Joke.” He also does what he can to keep Allen humble by reminding Allen of the 2011 World Series when Denny’s Cardinals beat Allen’s Rangers. Denny is a big baseball fan and can tell you everything going on with his Cardinals.
Denny’s joyful presence adds even more joy to the wonderful atmosphere at Ashure Ministry. He says the friendships and fellowship he experiences with the volunteers and the staff keep him coming back. He also appreciates the knowledge that his efforts are helping those in need in the community. Denny feels it is part of his duty to encourage others to try volunteering at Ashure Ministry so that they can experience the joy of serving here. He also shares the many ways they can help neighbors in need through the multi-faceted work of the ministry.
Denny is one of the many special people who contribute to all of the good work going on at Ashure Ministry. Thank you, Denny, for everything you do here and for the community we serve!
