Moving Forward
The first thing Tamara noticed when Marcus stepped up to the front desk was the uncertainty in his eyes. Recently released from prison and just beginning a local re-entry program, he carried himself with the quiet tension of someone trying to figure out how to start again. Freedom had arrived but so had a long list of frightening challenges.
Marcus came to Ashure Ministry because he needed the basics—food to eat and clothing to wear while he tried to rebuild his life. He had been referred by several people, and finally got the nerve to come in. After months inside prison walls, even small decisions felt overwhelming. The future was wide open but also scary.
When he first arrived, Tamara greeted him with a warm smile. Marcus was hesitant. “Take your time,” she told him gently as she walked him through the application process. “We’ll do our very best to help you.”
He quietly explained with embarrassment that he needed clothing and food.” Tamara reassured him, “We will make sure you leave here with food and some clothes to help you get started. Don’t be ashamed. This is why we are here!” Marcus nodded quietly, still taking everything in. “I’m trying to do things right this time,” he said. “It’s just… a lot.”
Later, Marcus returned to ask for clothing suited for a job placement. This time, the fear in his eyes had been replaced with something else—excitement. He stepped up to Tamara’s desk with a smile this time. “Hi!” Tamara greeted him warmly, “Tell me what is going on with you, Marcus!”
Marcus’s face lit up. “I moved up in the program,” he said proudly. “They gave me my own room now. Just me. I never thought I’d be this excited about a little room, but it feels like a big step to have my own room again.” Then he paused and added quietly,
"𝑮𝒐𝒅’𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒅𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆. 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒏𝒐𝒘."
Even quick moments like these occurrences at Ashure remind us that rebuilding a life happens one step at a time. It’s because of the support of generous donors that individuals like Marcus can find the food, clothing, and encouragement needed during difficult transitions.
Your kindness is helping create very positive steps forward —REAL change— and opening the door to new beginnings for people who are working hard to move forward.
